Not A Coconut

…If you wanna be a coconut, you might as well hear it, you can’t be a Fruit of the Spirit.

It’s a silly song we sing with our kids, but there is a lot of insight and truth to be had from this little message!

Children are an amazing blessing – and, as we all know, they bring a hefty dose of responsibility, challenges, and even stress into our lives.  No matter how achieved we may be in our parenting skills, each of us will fall short at times. The desire to be a wonderful parent may be in our hearts, but truth be had, we can’t be our best if we’re not first being true to ourselves.

A good tree produces good fruit and a bad tree produces bad fruit.

We all possess individual strengths and are called to use our gifts in our own, unique way to achieve a common good. No one gift is more praiseworthy than another – despite the pressures often placed by our society – pushing us to be a coconut, kiwi or some other exotic and perceived glamorous fruit, but you might as well hear it, that’s not the Fruit of the Spirit.

What may seem like an ordinary acorn today will someday be great oak tree – that tree will produce amazing fruits!  Nope, not a coconut…

I’m talking about:

Self Control

We are to work hard, listen to our hearts, ask for guidance, seek our individual calling, and ripen the fruits we innately possess in order to enrich the lives of those around us – and for parents, that means our children.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men. Colossians 3:23

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.  1 Corinthians 12:4

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 1 Peter 4:10
